WIP Nurgle Imperial Knight pt5

The finish line is in sight which is good as I only have a few weeks left before the GT final, so I thought I would put on a quick update of my progress and hopefully he will be finished by this time next week Woohoo!

Swords almost finished I just need to add some more weathering to the blade.

All the armour is now complete and ready to be attached. I find it amazing the uses we can find from the spare bits from kits, I managed to use both spare heads and bits from both spare arms from someone else's ebay reject pile to create my conversion "waste not want not" :)

Well it took some doing between 4 - 6 weeks, but it is finally finished and I am a week early for the GT final.  This got me thinking: 15 years ago when I got back into gaming I remember wanting to game quick and I painted 16 Crises Suits and 90 Fire Warriors in about the same amount of time it has taken me to create this.  Now don't get me wrong I'm not made of money, I did not buy new, I bought them all on ebay for a steal and what ever condition they were in for the right price (cheap) and I repainted and rebased them all.  It just goes to show that we game and paint sometimes out of necessity; either to full fill our need to roll dice or to let our creative juices flow through our creations..... But I am slowing down in my old age :)

GT final at Warhammer fest

Fresh back from Games Workshops GT final, I thought I would through some images together and share my thoughts on the event.  Thanks to Ben for convincing me to go and I'm only sorry Dave and Otty where not there.

I have to be honest I was not expecting to have a great time, as I am not the best gamer in the world and I would be playing against some seriously competitive players.  Also the venue did not interest me either, Warhammer World fills me with a school boy joy every time I go there.  Having said that, I played 5 different armies and each game was fun to play against even though I lost 4 out of 5 and I got tabled 3 times.  My enjoyment mostly was due to my opponents being cool and very friendly, they all played hard and played to win which is to be expected at a tournament final.  So a big shout out to my opponents;

Game 1 Simon and his Custodes
Game 2 Craig and his Ultra Marines
Game 3 Jo and his Imperial Knights
Game 4 Ash and his Tau
Game 5 Brett and his Astra Militarum

Each of the players I meet I would be very happy to play against again.  I also have to mention that Craig, Jo (Golden Demon bronze winner) and I where nominated for best painted army so at times during the event our tables looked awesome and I think Warhammer TV missed out, lol :)

Sorry its out of focus, lovely army though trust me.

I also entered my Khorne Renegade Knight into Golden Demon which in hindsight was a little foolish as the paint job on it was not Golden Demon level put i thought while I'm here why not but looking at the other enteries it was clear I didn't stand a chance maybe next time I will spend more time painting something just for Golden demon :)

Congratulations to Morgan who won the event with his awesome Orks.  I also would like to say a shout out to some old and new friends who I have meet over the years at Warhammer World; Henry I have know idea why your army was not selected your Crimson Fist army was amazing and if anybody took some images please feel free to post on this blog. Mike unlucky bud we really need a new codex for Imperial Knights and Tom keep plugging away at those paints mate :)

We got there a little early

The main event does not start until Saturday morning

My entrance for best painted army

Well blow me down with a feather I've waited years to win "Best Painted Army" and I only go and do at the GT final, I was truly shocked as there was some amazing armies in the cabinets, I also won Hero of Legend and Icon of Legend.  I think the three months converting and painting my Nurgle Knight paid off.

For me my hobby skills has increased due to greater contact with more people and experiences, I am lucky enough to have 4 very good friends who love playing but also they love to convert and paint with ever increasing skills, this pushes us all to up our game and we are all striving to improve our selves as hobby artists.  Once you add hundreds of people who are like minded and want to improve it can only add to our own knowledge base.  My ex tutor once said to me "you can be the best painter in the world but if you never exhibit anything, who will ever know?"

Cool outfit mate, who's your tailor?

Do Good Bases Maketh the Man or Woman?

Today I wanted to discuss bases, particularly is it worth the "time and effort"?  Over the years I have painted many models or figures that I have spent more time on the base rather than the model.  It is my humble opinion that if your have the time and inclination that a good base can be used to promote not just your hobby ability but the model itself.  The base can be used to tell a narrative or create an atmosphere placing the model in a scene.

I am currently working towards a Imperial Knight Army and what better way to tell a narrative than a severed head at the models feet.  Having said all that about narrative and time and effort, and after seeing some fantastic bases at Golden Demon 2 weeks ago.   I came to the conclusion that maybe I need to spent more time on my bases to add the little details that help to create a scene.  I often go for a central piece of titillation.  I think in future I should add more to the whole base, but then I can run the risk of the base being the main attraction while the model could be lost or secondary to the latter.  I'm interested to hear your opinions.....

And while you think it over here is a selection of bases I have created over the years:-

I thought I would share some old images I found of my Defiler Brass Scorpions.  My only regret is that I didn't take any WIP images, but it was back in the day before blogging and sharing all the cool things we create.  The armour is 40mm waste pipe with 3mm plasticard trim.  I hope you like :)

Well it has been a while but as promised I thought is was time to showcase my Renegade Knights.  I hope you like, please feel free to post any comments or questions, enjoy :)

I entered these guys into the Facebook Warhammer Community monthly painting competition, not expecting to get anywhere as some of the entries are golden demon winners.  I was very suprised that I came first and I'm still in shock now - maybe I won because of my conversions or maybe I cheated because I entered two in one image :)

They also spelt my name wrong, I've been called worse :)

I also thought I would do a little sneaky peak on how my House Terryn Imperial Knight is coming along.  Its been a long time painting this guy and I'm still going, OMG I miss speed painting lol :)

Khorne Armiger Warglaives WIP

It's been a while and I've been a little busy.  I used GW's Crypt Horrors as inspiration for my daemonic possessed Armiger Warglaives and I thought I would do a few step by step images of how I created them.

First I wanted to have all the legs in different posses, so I cut up each set and re-positioned them.

I also included daemonic claws on two out of the three sets.

I used cocktail sticks, spru and guitar strings to create the basic frame.

Then I started to use layers of milliput and green stuff building them up over several days.  I choose green stuff on the back bones as I thought they would be fragile if made from Milliput, green stuff has bend-ability :)

I intend to create the weapons and aromour similar to Forge World's Gal Vorbaks, I'll post more images soon.

Post a comment if you like :)

Warhammer 40,000 Grand Tournament 18/19 - Heat 4

Fresh back from Warhammer 40,000 Grand Tournament 18/19 - Heat 4 I'm feeling dazed.  Four good friends went with high hopes to qualify for the final, with one friend unable to make it due to important family commitments, and non of us qualified; but it wasn't the end of the world.

It has been said to me that the events at Warhammer world can be too competitive and the people you will meet can be complete arsses.   Well I would like to set the record straight; yes the armies you will be up against will be hard "it's a tournament", in the past I have enjoyed all most all of the games I have played their, win or lose.  this time however I enjoyed all my games.   This is down to my opponents, the people you will meet are not arsses, I don't think I've come up against one yet.  This Grand Tournament Heat 4 I had an absolute blast even though I lost all my games, meeting five great new players was fab.  No I didn't through the games I just couldn't role my self out of a wet paper bag and four of my opponents kept saying "OMG I'm so sorry I've never rolled this well in my life" lol literally lol.

These events are not just great for meeting new players who love 40K but also great to meet up with players I have played against in the past, to swap war stories, see how their armies are developing and swap painting techniques.

So lets talk about how we got on.  Otty and I placed our favorite figures in the cabinet for the painting competitions and because I was running Renegade Knight I could only enter Icon of legend, I was up against Otty's scratch built Tyranid Bastion, which I beat me in the past.

Otty and I where lucky enough to get nominated for best painted armies, which I have to admit is one of my main goals when I go to a tournament.  I never expect to win because the standard of painting is so high but I really like to get nominated.   This is another reason for going to tournaments to see what other great figure painters are up to and see how they have up their techniques.

Compared to the other cabinets I thought my shelf looked a little empty with only having six models, even though they probably took me, on and off a 12 months to convert and paint. So how did we do?

I have to apologies to Otty who didn't win, it was just my lucky day.... winning Icon of legend....

Winning Best Painted Army......

And... Knight of the Inner Circle, an award I have never won before.  To get 5 player votes and 5 army votes does not happen often, in fact all the years I have been going I have only ever seen one other person win it, so be a part of that group feels amazing.

All these images have been taken from the Warhammer world Facebook page. please visit the other fabulous armies on display, enjoy.

I thought it was time to share my WIP Roboute Guilliman, Seeing now that he is the "Emperor of mankind" he should be wearing his new golden amour.

I'm still trying to perfect the NMM (non-metalic-metals), I have tried 3 different variations on my Renegade Knights, I thought this style or my 4th would suit Guilliman best.  Your thoughts and comments are most welcome :)

Welcome back to part 2 of Roboute Guilliman WIP, as you can see I actually ventured past shades of brown.  I was getting bored of just using the same colours all the time, so I decided to see how the Ultra Marine Logos would work with his gold armour.  I'm interested see what you think of this gold and blue combination :)

New Slaanesh Models - was the wait worth it?

It has been a long while since a model has stopped me in my tracks and left my dumb founded but GW's new Keeper of Secrets, for me, has knocked my for six.  I need to see it in the flesh but first impressions is it looks fantastic and great potential for conversions.  But the burning question is, will they release Fulgrim?

I love this guy, it looks like I have found my new Slaanesh Daemon Prince.

OMG it as if they read my mind but did a better job, I should hope so too.  It looks like I got the pose and the size right even though my Keeper of Secrets was converted all most 15 years ago, which I sold it on ebay some years later, I wonder where she is now?

Just a quick update on my progress with good old Rob, helmet, right arm and back pack done.  From the start of this project I have been conscious that I didn't want too much gold on the model, which is difficult as potentially all his armour could be gold.  That was why I decided to add the blue but also the white to the eagle wing tips and I almost did the same on his iron halo, but as you can see I went for gold instead.

What are your thoughts, did I make the right decision?

Welcome back to part 4 and as you can see, he is almost.  I just have a couple of touch ups and some  details to do, but for the most part he is complete.

This is a strange thing to admit but this was my first attempt at flame and it quite tricky to make it look right, hopefully you will agree it looks a little bit like flame :)

Next time he will be on his base :)

Welcome back to part 5 and he is finally finished.  I added the eagles head from his original base and a column from the Kill Team box set, everything else has been carved from Foamex board (the stuff sign-writers print onto) which is condensed foam.  I find Foamex board has a lovely quality for doing scenery of this type, if you score it and snap it gives a great masonry texture in the break perfect for rubble.

Renegade knights WIP images - and how they where made Part 1 Khorne

$

Hi everybody, it has been a while since I started my mammoth task of creating a heavily converted Renegade Knight army.  So, I thought it was about time I showed my WIP images so you can see how exactly they where created.

First up,  Khorne.  When converting a model I generally just use the materials I have and I "make do".  It is extremely rare that I will go out and buy materials just for the purpose of that model.  There is two reasons for this:- 1. I am incredibly lazy and 2. I don't like spending money.  Having said that I did buy Brown stuff specifically for his Lightning claw style fists, but then used them to create his hands when I should have used either Grey stuff or Green stuff.

I also have to be honest and apologies, because I have no idea why I didn't take any WIP images of how I created the Spine.  The spine is just made up of 2mm wire and then layer upon layer Yellow Grey Milliput.  I like to built up the milliput so it is bigger then I need it to be, the reason being is that I like to carve into it, unlike Green Stuff which is a lot more precise and you can create the desired shape with out a reductive process.  You can see that the smaller 'Spinous Processes' are made from both Brown and Grey Stuff, I broke them while carving into them :)

Materials used:-

Milliput - White and Yellow Grey
Grey Stuff
Brown Stuff
Green Stuff
Plasticard
2mm Wire

Renegade knights WIP images - and how they where made Part 2 Nurgle

$

Hi everybody, it has been a while since I started my mammoth task of creating a heavily converted Renegade Knight army.  So, I thought it was about time I showed my WIP images so you can see how exactly they where created, Welcome back to part 2 Nurgle.

I know I have shown these images before but I thought I would collate them into this short series of posts, and now this project is complete I can look back and reflect on my previous comments.

"I've wanted to do a Nurgle Knight for ages but I never got around to it, and the longer I left it the more and more models became available for conversion like the Glottkin Knight; and if I'm honest I almost did the conversion then I saw someone on ebay selling all the bits I needed from the Great Unclean One, and I thought it would make for an easier and less time consuming build (the jury was out on if it was quicker or not)" quoting my self from a previous post

That last comment is still an issue I cannot resolve is it easier to kit bash or to sculpt from scratch or under an underlying base model.  I will be approaching this subject again in the future, but for now; pros and cons, kit bashing vs new sculpts.

Kit bashing:-
Although you may have amazing plastic bits that will look good on a model the problem is that most of the time they do not fit, and we spend an enormous amount of time trying to get them to fit.  Then we need to make the join seamless, which at times can be another lengthy process of sculpting and modelling.

New scuplts:-
Right from the off you can create exactly what you want depending on skill and budget.  like most things in life if it's worth doing well take your time don't try and do it all in one go.  Create an under sculpt first so you can add or take away after.  most of my work days days or weeks.  Now I will interject with a disclaimer here and say "I do not consider myself to be a great sculptor or even a good sculptor, I just love doing it and like to consistently push myself and improve".  Now there may be people reading this thinking "yeah rubbish your better than me and I can never do that"... to this I would say, I thought that way too, but until you give it a go and are prepared to fail you will never learn and improve.  Don't get despondent with failure it is a good thing, it gives you time to reflect and consider "if I did it again how could I improve it".

So if we consider these facts I would say that kit basing is a little faster but sometimes we have to make compromises, and sculpting your own takes patience time and a little bit more kill.  So once you have mastered kit bashing then it will be time to move onto sculpting your own conversions.

Generally Materials used:-
Milliput - White and Yellow Grey
Grey Stuff
Brown Stuff
Green Stuff
Plasticard
Spare bits from the Great Unclean One
Cocktail sticks
