Renegade knights WIP images - and how they where made Part 3 Black Legion / Sons of Horus

Hi everybody, it has been a while since I started my mammoth task of creating a heavily converted Renegade Knight army.  So, I thought it was about time I showed my WIP images so you can see how exactly they where created, Welcome back to part 3 Black Legion.

If you have been following this mini series you should be familiar with the two previous Renegade Knights and you can see I am a bit of a fan of Daemonic Possession.  I have been experimenting with how it would manifest itself, by adding a lot sculptural pieces to them, but for this one I wanted to do something different.  Rather than adding I've gone for reduction, particularly with the main daemonic possession Chaos 8 pointed star symbol on the main carapace.  This was achieved by applying a 1cm thick layer of Milliput underneath the carapace making sure I got into all the nooks and crannies, following the design that I had drawn on the top.  Once fully cured I used two different sizes of Holesaws to create the small and large circles on the design. I then used a Dremel to carve out the design.  Finally I used Brown stuff to sculpt the armour cracking and deforming around the branded style symbol.

As a small contrast to the brand I sculpted the Son's of Horus symbol on one shoulder armour using Green Stuff to create the same type of  armour cracking and deforming. On the other shoulder, which I have lost the image, I used the actual surface of the pad as the eye and created extra armour on top as if the eye to give the illusion of the eye forming under the armour and pushed the armour outwards and falling off.

Going back to my original thought of this Knight would be a reduction of it self, I clearly forgot this premise and failed when it came to crating the Battle cannon shield mounts.  And they became a little large and larger than I intended, luckily they fitted but only just....  The armour mounts are laser cut 3mm plasticard scuplted down with a Dremel to form sharp angular edges and on the reverse I have added Brown stuff replicating the front.

I used an airbrush for the fake light refection/highlight in the eye but the rest of the Knight was painted by hand

Renegade knights WIP images - and how they where made Part 4 Khorne Armiger Warglaives

Hi everybody, it has been a while since I started my mammoth task of creating a heavily converted Renegade Knight army.  So, I thought it was about time I showed my WIP images so you can see how exactly they where created, Welcome back to part 4 Khorne Armiger Warglaives.

One of my favorite models over the years are the Crypt Horrors, I have used these for many converting projects, they where also the inspiration for the Khorne Renegade Knight.  So as a homage to them, I used the backs of the three Crypt Horrors as inspiration for my daemonic possessed Armiger Warglaives.

First I wanted to have all the legs in different posses, so I cut up each set and re-positioned them

I also included daemonic claws on two out of the three sets.

I used cocktail sticks, spru and guitar strings to create the basic frame.

Then I started to use layers of milliput and green stuff building them up over several days.  I choose green stuff on the back bones as I thought they would be fragile if made from Milliput, green stuff has bend-ability :)

I intend to create the weapons and armour similar to Forge World's Gal Vorbaks.

I still think it was a good idea to give each one a back possession conversion, but, I came to a sticking point, what to do with the Heavy Stubber?  I thought about putting them between the legs, or under the chin or maybe even on a shoulder mount, in the end I decided to attach the Heavy Stubber underneath the main gun

For this Armiger I thought I would make him a little bit different and use a Blood Thirsters' Greater Axe of Khorne

Project: Custodes Castellan Knight Sneak Peak- Completed

It has been months in the making but I can finally say it's finished as this is just a sneaky peak I'm not going to add much more apart from the size comparison image and a comment my mate Dave from Confessions of a 40K Addict "Big boy pants!" enjoy :)

Project: Custodes Castellan Knight - Concept through to design pt1

Love it or hate it, my design for a Custodes Castellan Knight has had a mixed response, so much so that I feel the need to justify my decision making.  But first I would just like to clarify what the original concept was.  The Custodes Knight is a relic from the past, manufactured on Terra and a prototype to the current Imperial knights.  With this as my mantra, I did not need to stick to the original design by GameWorkshop.  I was free to model it on the Custodes aesthetic.

As most of you will be aware my design is based on the Forge World's Legio Custodes Telemon Heavy Dreadnought and I have to say is probably one of my favourite designs for 40K EVER!  Speaking of which I couldn't mention the Telemon with out mentioning the Mondoshawan from the film Fifth Element, in my opinion one of the top 10 Sci Fi films of all time, the Mondoshawan had such a unique design and akin to my next contender.  The original terminator in the early days of 40K,  mkI Tactical Dreadnought Armour, I remember queuing 40 deep outside GamesWorkhop Liverpool for an hour waiting for the shop to open to buy this bad boy, it is currently sitting in my mate Otty's bit box of things to do :)

Images owned by Games Workshop, ForgeWorld and the film Fifth Element

Ok so we have my mantra of 'Custodes looking' and my influences of 'gold and flamboyant shoulder pads' the next part would be tricky to get the design to fit around the basic shell of the Castellan while fitting all the guns in.  So for once I actually sketched out some preliminary designs on scrap paper.

I really liked my second design because it's almost a complete copy of eh Telemon, but I didn't think the Siegebreaker cannons would fit, the shoulder joints would be in the way.  I decided to reduce the overall mass of the pouldrons and house the gun higher up.  It only just fit there to be honest, if I wanted to use both Siegebreaker barrels either side I would have had to make the pouldrons even bigger.  I think that would have made the Knight too top heavy so I had to settle for a single barrel in the end, which I think was a compromise I was not happy with.

I did some slicing and dicing to get the ideal design of head for my knight.

I fleshed out the chest plate with Plasticard

Kit basing a Shieldbreaker missile housing from a whirlwind kit.

I used plasticard to form the basic structure of the pouldrons.

Then a glued more plasticard to strengthen the structure.  I couldn't find my mini clamps so clothes pegs did just as good a job :)

Testing to see if they fitted.

I little bit of body filler and a lot of sanding, followed by more plasticard I had my basic top half completed.

Love it or hate it, my design for a Custodes Castellan Knight has had a mixed response, but enough of that, you have waited a long time for part 2 so lets dive in.

I used the original shin armour from the Castellan and added 3mm plasticard to the sides and bottom and 1 mm plasticard as a guide to the front.  Once I placed the front  guide on a I placed more 3mm plasticard to the top but I forgot to take a photo.

Now I had the desired skeleton structure I used car body filler to blend all the elements together, and sanded the filler to get a smooth finish.

I used the Legio Custodes Telemon Heavy Dreadnought as a guide for the leg armour.

Before I extended the legs I would need to create a base and feet to make sure everything fits together.  I used the broken Aquila from the Honoured Imperium scenery kit, and sculpted extra sections and extra cracks underneath the feet with Milliput.  You can also see I have changed the toes of the feet too.

I know it is hard to see in this image, but you can just see the extra plasticard I inserted into the legs to make them longer.

I used 1mm plasticard for the Aquila symbols on the leg armour and a Dremil to carve out the swirls on the other sections of the armour.  Just like the Shin guards I used the original armour and added plasticard and body filler to get the shape I needed for the thigh and arm armour.

Next time I will show you how I airbrushed it :)

What do you do during lock down - Blog and Paint baby

Well once again I have been away from my blogging responsibilities due to my lack of enthusiasm for 40K.  Do not despair I have been keeping myself busy with 5 different ways to play games with my friends and an excuse to paint figures.

Here is a snap shot projects undertaken and posts to come over the next few weeks and months:-

Blackstone Fortress

Bloodbowl Vampire and Werewolf team

Lord of the Rings Battle companies

Adeptus Titanicus

SpaceHulk

Making an Alternative Vampire Blood Bowl Team pt1 - Vampires

Many, many years ago I use to play Dungeon Bowl which in my opinion was a better game than Blood Bowl, but unfortunately there is no release for it, so I will have to stick with Blood Bowl as I am abstaining from 40K.  I also wanted a conversion / kit bashing project, so I decided on a team based around the Brides of Dracula and I think I found the perfect candidates as the basic form; Myrmourn Banshees.

As the heads of the Myrmourn Banshees are ghost like visages with vials, I decided to cut them off and create my own female Vampire heads. I used spare heads from the Dark Eldar sorry Drukhari Wyches and attached the hair from Daughters of Khaine Doomfire Warlocks.

Now I just needed to blend the hair to the head and create breasts to fill the gap in the metal chest armour/basque.

I included this one for a laugh, I accidentally selected a Dark Elder Male head (I wasn't wearing my glasses) and I only noticed the next day when he/she was finished oops

I was originally goinf to paint all different colours of hair but I just like the red as in contrast against the blue green of the clothing and the green vines on the base.  To be honest I got carried away.

OK they are finished very easy to paint and fairly easy to convert, to create a unique looking vampire team.  I know it's not a traditional style of Blood Bowl team but who wants to be traditional :)

Now I have my Vampires I thought I would use up models I have collected over the years as Thralls.  I found 6 Skin Wolves (I think that was what they where called) that where half painted which just needed re-basesing and 10 Fenrisian Wolves.  I know it is a bit of an over kill with the amount but it could be fun to do and look cool.  Then it struck me.... it is a bit Twilighlty.

I used sculpted bases from easy fit AoS figures I had collected over the past few months.

I don't use dry brushing method any more but I wanted to do this as fast as possible because I have many projects to get through.  So I re-introduced myself to the technique and I forgot how fast you can paint units.

Unfortunatly I used all my moulded bases on the Skin Wolves so I started create my own from the Garden of Morr set.

So there we have it my Blood Bowl team is complete with enough replacements to keep me going for ages, :)

Lord of the Rings Battle companies pt1 and 2

A while back our gaming buddy Otty wanted to try Battle Companies and after many discussions on you only need a few figures and it wont take long to paint, I purchased some "Hunter Orcs on Fell Wargs" thinking one day maybe in 15 years time I will get around to it.  Afterwards I started thinking how did that happen? I have so much stuff to paint why did I buy more? then it struck me "I had been Gríma worm tongued", bugger!

To continue with the ethos of what to do in lockdown while disheartened with 40K, I started to put the figures together and create rocky bases, using up some white milliput  The arms are a little small then what I am normally used too, but they are a only 20mm, but  I really like the Wargs though.  So I thought I would look at getting another pack then I spotted this on ebay:-

11 Hunter Orcs on Fell Wargs and 15 Wargs, GW sell the Hunter Orcs on Fell Wargs for £25 for 6 and 6 Fell Wargs for £20 to buy new would almost cost me £110.  So you could appreciate this caught my interest.  Sometimes I love ebay but I do feel very sorry for the person who sold these because I bought them for a steal, only £30...... wow that was lucky.  Not only do I have a Battle company, but I have almost enough for a full army.

My idea was to do a step by step guide to speed batch painting, I thought I had emailed all the images off my phone before I deleted them unfortunatley I was wrong so I lost all the images so here are the finished Wargs, bugger!

These are the original 6 with milliput bases, I added some shields before I started painting them

And this is the full army, and base coated, ink wash with Agrax Earthshade and finally a dry brush highlight.  Very quick and fairly effective on mass.... :)

Painting Space Hulk Genestealers the quick and easy way

Since lockdown and spending all my time in isolation I have been relying on, and teaching my son how to play 40K, but 7 hours is way to long of a game.  So I cracked open my Space Hulk boxset and OMG I had forgotten what a great game it is.  I still have the original in the loft but the figures in the new one are amazing.  After we had a few games with my son, who has a very small "Genestealer cuts army" turned round to me and said "wouldn't it be great if these figures where painted" and secretly he wanted them for his army, he thinks I'm daft.  But... yes he is right it would be good if they where painted.

Before we started to paint the figures I decided to buy some of GW's "Sector Mechanicus Industrial Bases" and start trimming the Genestealers to fit on their new bases.

Last year when my son started painting (before contrast paints came out) he found normal GW paints too thick to use and didn't like painting.   I mixed up some washes for hes Genestealer Cults army.  He painted all hes figures and he was happy with them, so I started to paint the Patriarch in these washes, but I wanted them to look like the ones on the box and also simple and achievable for my son to do.

I decided to delve into the realms of contrast paint as I think these paints are aimed at my sons level and age bracket and I would be able to get the effect and tone of what I want.  I chose Akhelian Green with a Druchii Violet wash for the carapace and Magos Purple for the skin.  I was happy with the effect with just these three quick coats of paints.  I painted his other Patriarch and showed him how easy it would be.

He liked the effect so much that we based the original Space Hulk Genestealers and he wanted to paint them and I would paint the Genestealers from the new Space Hulk.

They don't look bad all together

The new ones all painted.

And the old ones my son painted

Imperial Knights painted with the aid of an airbrush - kind of

Dave or better known as Dwez from 40kaddicts sent me a text saying take a look at this on Twitter and you should put your stuff on; the twit said "Hear ye, hear ye! A grand galactic knightly tournament declared in ye old Emperor’s name. Share your loyal and heretic Knights with us!"
So I put my Chaos Knights on and I got some nice positive re-twittes and comments.  Then I realised I hadn't photographed or blogged about my new loyalist Knights, so hear goes.

Following on from the strange and mixed response from my post on my "Project: Custodes Castellan Knight" I had decided to paint my Imperial knights using my airbrush.  I still consider myself to be a novice at airbrushing but I felt confident enough after painting my Castellan.  I had already painted the blue armour on them all, and I had finished my warlord, but I wasn't happy with the gold trim which was hand painted. as you can see below, the airbrush gold on the Castellan looks better, in my opinion.

I stripped the armour off him and dug out all the other armoured bits from my other Knights and started to mask up.

This is a long and laborious process, and adding cleaning the airbrush every blink of an eye, it can put people off airbrushing.  But the results speak for them selves, it's not quicker, it's just an alternative method of painting.

Then following my technique I used on the Castellan I began to airbrush away with no idea how hey would turn out as it is all masked off.

I revealed one first to see if I liked the effect, and I did, phew.

It all looks a little too clean and tidy so it needs a lot of weathering.

OK so far so good, but now they needed basing and I wanted a theme base for all five but I didn't want the bases for my three un-based ones to over shadow the first two.  I decided to use the same Aquila and add some building wall sections and rubble, hoping it would work together.

You can also see I have some 10cm bases in the shot too, they are from my Armiger Helverins which I still haven't finished oops.  I airbrushed the bases just in the same style as  my Warlord and Castellan and here is the results of many months of work.

And as a passing shot this is my full collection of Knights and stuff I hope you enjoy :)

Painting a Trygon with Contrast Paints

$

Following on from a previous post "Painting Space Hulk Genestealers the quick and easy way" and my son's enthusiasm for painting Genestealers; I thought I would share what happened next.

My son has finally got the painting bug 'literally' and he said to me "I like Genestealers, but I want to paint a big monsters", I knew this would happen, but anyway.... I spent a few days looking for a suitable monster to buy cheap on ebay and we came across a Trygon for £25

Not the cheapest but difficult times on ebay at the moment.  He settled on a Trygon because it was big, very big, and then he said could I make a base for him just like the Genestealer bases but.. I want it bursting up from underneath the floor of the space ship.  As it was going to be a one off, I agreed.

So I put the Trygon in some suitable paint remover, and set to work.  I used spare damaged end floor sections from GW's Shrine of The Aquila, plastic girders, Rhino doors and wire mesh.  I shaped them to give the effect of something bursting from the ground and I used sprue underneath the floor tiles to give a little extra depth to the hole.

I sanded the edges with a Dremel and used Milliput to fill the gaps

I primed it grey and used black primer on the hole.

As with the Genestealers I primed the Trygon with grey underneath with a white highlight.

I then handed it to my son and said enjoy have fun.  This was a strange feeling to spend a lot of time and effort making something and then give it to someone else to paint.  I was feeling a little nervous and I was wondering whether or not he would actually paint it.

Well I have to say I was extremely shocked it took him 2 days and he asked for help using the airbrush on the base.  I also helped him with dry brushing the base with silver and the detail of the eyes but that was all.

A part from the base there is no highlights what so ever on this model just contrast paints and an ink wash - AIkhelian Green with a Druchii Violet wash for the carapace, Magos Purple for the skin, Gryth-Charger Grey for the claws and Aethermatic Blue for the tongue.  Also Flash Gitz Yellow over white for the eyes and he is done, quick and effective.  Oh crap, he liked it so mush he spent his own money buying a big bulk order of Tyranids on ebay.... but I said "you haven't finished painting your Genestealer Cults" and he pointed out how many figures do you have that are incomplete? erm.......... and Oh double crap does this mean I have to make bases for all his army :(

Indomitus - Painting Necrons

$

It has been a couple of days now since the Indomitus Box has dropped for us mere mortals and I thought I would share my progress and some confessions.

Like most people who play and collect 40K I just cant help myself from buying the new shiny shiny, and although when the Necron first came out I was tempted but I wasn't overwhelmed with the figures, how things can change.  I just could not resist in starting another new army, which is mad because I have so much on the go.

Confession time.... My son's Genestealer and Tyranid armies are almost complete and I am very behind with my blogging so a massive apology, but as his army is almost complete we needed another project for the summer holidays.  It was my sons idea to make this army together as a joint army, and I thought it was a great idea, I didn't need mush of an excuse anyway, the figures are amazing.

I have used the Canoptek Reanimator as a test model to see what our purposed colour scheme could look like, and I haven't stolen the colour scheme from Blackstone Fortress's Spindle Drone, honest! But first I had some converting to do, I just don't like the quadruped look of the model. it has too many legs, and also the Skorpekh Destroyers only have three legs.... and so do Spindle Drones lol.

As it was a joint project it must be relatively easy and quick, with bits that my son could help with.  To start with the dark sections of the Canoptek Reanimator have been dry brushes with Incubi Darkness and a small edge highlight with Kabalite Green.  The white is wet blended with Fenrisian Grey, Celestra Grey and White Scar with an edge highlight with White Scar.  I didn't have to wet blend and I probably will not wet blend my Necron Warriors but I just wanted to see the full effect.  Finally I hand painted the pink with Fulgrim Pink, then gave a glow effect with the same colour with my airbrush and then used Contrast Magos purple to tone the pink down a little bit.  I then went back in with Fulgrim Pink with a paint brush.  I highlighted the orbs with the airbrush adding a little white to Fulgrim Pink.  From start to finish including the converting (not including drying times) it had taken me 4 hours not bad for me and as I am teaching my son how to airbrush and dry brush, there is nothing he can't do in this project.

The final stage was the base, I used one of GW's pre sculpted 60mm basaes and added a little extra debris.  I added lots of browns and oranges for a little colour contrast to the all overall effect of the model.

I hope you like the effect, I know it is not the best painted model in the world, but that is not what I am going for, this is a speed painting project with a striking colour scheme that my son and I can do together.  Although I may have to convert all the new models into tripods, and why not tripods are cool :)

Welcome back to painting Necrons like Spindle drones from Blackstone Fortress.  It is also a speed painting project for my son and I to attempt during lockdown.  Well most of the painting is speed painting but airbrushing and particular masking off areas is definitely not speed painting, I think I spent more time masking off then I did painting the whole model lol :).

to recap the colours and technechques used on this
  1. Dry brushes with Incubi Darkness and a small edge highlight with Kabalite Green.
  2. The white is wet blended with Fenrisian Grey, Celestra Grey and White Scar with an edge highlight with White Scar
  3. I have changed how I have done the pink from the previous post, I hand painted the pink with Emperor's Children, then gave a glow effect with the same colour with my airbrush,  I then highlighted with with Fulgrim Pink and highlighted further by adding a little white to Fulgrim Pink.  Finally I  used Contrast Magos purple to tone the pink down a little bit in the resist areas

I wanted to airbrush the Hyperphase Thresers in exactly the same style as GW have done with the green on theirs but I would be using pink.  I didn't photograph the dry brushing stage because I wanted to conciontrate on this pink process, but first a lot masking off to do.  I masked off the model first.

Then I masked off the inner blade.

I added 3 layers of pink trying to get a smooth transition between each colour using the airbrush; Emperor's Children, Fulgrim Pink and white mixed with Fulgrim Pink.  A handy way to do this is after you have added all the colours sometimes one tone of colour can be lost, so its always a good idea to add that colour back in so all colours are apparent and blended together.  For instance on these the Emperor's Children colour was lost when I added to mush Fulgrim Pink so a qiuck carful add of Emperor's Children did the trick,

I then did the same process on the inner blade and masked off the outerblade.  It is also a good idea to make sure the paint is fully dry before adding masking tape otherwise you can pull off the paint with the masking tape.

And there you go airbrushing complete, they will just need an edge highlight with Fulgrim Pink and black outlining.

I created based hacking and slashing parts from my bits box.  I want to continue the theme that the Emperium is rusting and decaying and the Necron although millions of years old they are pristine.

So there you have it I just need to paint the bases but I'll save it for next time when I'll be doing the Skorpekh Lord.

So what is on your hobby table at the moment?  For me its been three weeks of non stop playing with shades of yellow.  You've guest it, it's another Imperial Fists army.

I have a back catalogue of blogging to do, including my whole Necron army which is now complete and I have expanded my Death Guard by over 50% and, which is also finished.  For now though I thought I would share my latest creations and hint at what will be coming next over the coming weeks - including Imperial Fists Primaris Centurions and trying my damndest to create a shade for yellow which does not include brown :)  Enjoy.

Following on from the previous post on my Necrons, I realised I hadn't included how the bases have been finished, and, keeping with essence of the speed painting project, I decided to use metallic paints and dry brushing.

When it comes to basing I am a big fan of batch painting, especially if I'm using my airbrush.  the time it takes to get all the paints and airbrush ready you may as well paint 40 to 60 bases then just 5 to 10, this way the colours will match and so will the style of dry brushing.

All the bases have been undercoated with a grey primer then I airbrushed sections with Mournfang Brown and VX-88.  Then I hand painted the gold sections and dry brushed the other areas with Leadbelcher.  I gave everything a ink wash with Agrax Earthshade.  Finally, I edge highlighted with Stormhost Silver and added Nihilakh Oxide to parts of the gold and highlighted with Gauss Blaster Green.  Quick simple and effective.

I had also pre planned all the bases I would need and bought Necromunda, Sector Imperialis and Mechanicum bases.  The reason being that multiple units would have it's own base type. i.e.  each unit of 10 Necron warriors would have its own type of base, and therefore no need for any squad identification markings as I wanted the all to be the same.  Also you will note throughout these Necron posts all bigger models would have their own bespoke bases, as I am basicallly cheating on the standard smaller troops I thought it would counter act the standardisation.

I loved these models so much that I bought a second set and followed the same process including giving each one their own unique base.

Sneak peak of things to come in the next few weeks  - a converted Imperial Fists Primaris Centurion.

Welcome back to my Necron speed painting challenge, this time Skorpekh Load.  After making / bit bashing a suitable large base it was time to paint.  As you can see he has been painted in the exact same way as the Skorpekh Destroyers apart from the claws and he is bigger :)

It also used up a lot more masking tape too :)

Also another sneak peak of things to come - My converted Tripod Lokhust Heavy Destroyer

Indomitus - Painting Necrons Blackstone Fortress Style pt4 Lokhust Heavy Destroyer "my way" - Attack of the Tripods

When the second wave of Necrons where released many moons ago I thought what a cool idea, OK it is a bit Terminator T800ish..... But I did not like the Destroyers, why when you have the greatest arcane tech would you design a flying go-kart scarab abdomen as it's platform (my personal opinion btw)? surely there is a better way.  Then the Skorpekh Destroyers where released and I know I could now bring myself to own a Nercon army.

So how was I going to tackle the new Lokhust Heavy Destroyers, the answer was easy.  When the Indomitus box set was released the internet was awash with people trying to offload the Skorpekh Lords, I was lucky enough to pick up three very cheap on ebay £5 including postage.  I know what your thinking the Lokhust Heavy Destroyer are £21 each and then you add a £5 that's a high price to pay.  Yes you are right, they are expensive, but in my mind it is all worth it, especially, if  you are able to buy online and pick the Lokhust Heavy Destroyer up with 20-25% discount like at wayland Games and other sites, Then you have not lost money but gained a figure worthy of joining the ranks of the Necrons and they are flying Tripods... come on, that's cool :)

I have not included how I converted my Lokhust Heavy Destroyer because there was no conversion needed, it was a very simple cut and shut and a repose of the legs to make each one a little unique.

I also worked out I could retro fit the Lords body on the Lokhust Heavy Destroyer body.  I wont be painting these, they may go on ebay or sit on my shelves for an eternity as punishment for existing,  I dislike them that much.

I used my easy speed painting technique and they took no time at all to paint, don't forget this is a speed painting exercise after all, but I still want my figures to look cool :)

Oh, speaking of Tripods, what's that on the left?
